How to choose the right masturbator and what the "oil film" is really all about
As someone who has been using various masturbators for decades, I’ve tried almost everything—manual strokers, electric models, slow-play versions, high-intensity cups, etc. Every time a new model comes out, I’m among the first to test it.
In this article, I’ll share my experience and provide you with the most detailed guide to choosing the right masturbator—including the truth about the alleged "oil problem."
1. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all masturbator
A common beginner mistake is believing that one masturbator works perfectly for every man. That is simply not true. Pleasure is individual.
👉 What is great for one person can be disappointing for another.
👉 Anyone who asks a salesperson “Which toy is right for me?” is basically signaling: “I have no idea, just sell me anything.”
Many retailers take advantage of this and recommend products with the highest profit margins—not the ones that are actually a good fit. Finding a reputable shop or a trustworthy brand is therefore half the battle.
2. The myth of the "oil film" with TPE material
Most masturbators are made of TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer). To make the material soft and realistic, mineral oils are added. The softer the toy, the more likely a slight oil film will appear over time.
-
Harder material = less oil
-
Softer material = more oil
But the truth is: a slight oil film is completely normal and does not affect the user experience, provided you clean and maintain the masturbator properly.
Some of the softest, almost jelly-like toys I’ve tested felt incredibly realistic—and that bit of oil was hardly worth mentioning.
The argument that “less oil = better quality” is nothing more than a marketing trick. Some manufacturers produce rock-hard masturbators just to promise "zero oil film." But the result is clear: unpleasant and useless.
3. Comfort is more important than oil
When it comes to male sex toys, only one thing matters: sensation and stimulation. A soft, flexible masturbator almost always provides a better experience than a stiff, hard cup—even if it releases some oil.
So, don’t let the “oil film myth” distract you. What matters is how the toy feels.
